Montserrat - the jagged mountain
|
|
|
Montserrat
Montserrat means "jagged mountain" in Catalan. This unique mountain is located in a nature reserve about 30 km outside of Barcelona.
Monastery
In the monastery live 80 monks according to the rules of St. Benedict. This means that they dedicate their lives to praying (five times a day), working and taking care of visitors and pilgrims.
The work schedule includes studying, teaching theology and gardening, organizing the monastery libraries and helping out with the Montserrat boy’s choir.
The Boys Choir
The Montserrat Boys Choir has been around since the 1300s, which makes it one of Europe's first. The Boys Choir perform every day of the week except on Saturdays:
Monday - Friday: 1 p.m
Monday - Thursday: 6:45 p.m
Sundays and holidays: noon & 6:45 p.m
The Virgin of Montserrat - La
Verga de Montserrat
The Virgin of Montserrat is also known as La Moreneta (which means "the dark one") because of her dark skin colour. You can find the Virgin in the Montserrat Basilica.

Opening Hours Basilica
Monday - Sunday 7:30 a.m - 8 p.m
Visit the Virgin: 8 a.m - 10:30 a.m | noon - 6:30 p.m
