Barcelona Beach Sant Sebastià
Beach Sant Sebastià
Located in the Ciutat Vella district, San Sebastià is the closest to
Barcelona city on the Eastern end of the coastline. Together with Barceloneta,
it is the oldest and most traditional, with sporting clubs of great relevance in
the city for their sea-related activities. Sant Sebastià is also one of the
longest stretches of beach, measuring approximately 1,100 m.
Sant Sebastià beach is a favourite amongst men, who account for over 50% of its
users and compared to the other beaches in Barcelona, except Bogatell, its users
are of the highest average age. This is also the most frequently attended beach
by Barcelona's local residents (almost 70%), particularly inhabitants of Ciutat
Vella and it is the most commonly visited beach by foreigners.
It is a highly frequented beach with users making it their custom to come back
week after week, and many coming every day. There are many groups of friends and
also many solitary visitors. Groups from summer camps and school trips also
usually choose this beach.
Due to its location, a significant number of users come to Sant Sebastià beach
on foot or by public transport since there is a metro stop and several bus lines
providing connections with most of the city.
Area for disabled persons
The Sant Sebastià beach possesses an area for disabled persons with a bathing
assistance service. This service is available to disabled persons or people with
reduced mobility and consists of assisting them to get in and out of the water
and supervising their bathing time, using an amphibian bathing chair if
This area for the disabled is equipped with wooden walkways across the sand to
the shore, an adapted changing room, a sit-down shower and lift. All of this
equipment makes it possible for those who need assistance to reach the water
easily with the help of volunteers who help the users and their companions to
lift them from their wheelchairs into the amphibian chair and, if necessary, use
the lift to do so. Thus the volunteers provide assistance to approach, enter and
exit the water and also to accompany users whilst bathing.
This service is available every weekend and bank holiday during the months of
June and the second fortnight of September and every day during the months of
July and August and the first week in September, from 11 am to 2 pm.
