Barcelona neighbourhood guide - guide to Eixample

Eixample - in the center of the image is Sagrada Familia
Eixample

Eixample

In the year 1859 the town hall organised a competition to devise a new city plan in Barcelona. The old town was over-populated and it was time for the city to expand outside the protective city walls of Ciutat Vella.

The decision was made to tear down the old walls that had protected the city for hundreds of years and the architect Illdefons Cerdà was given the responsibility to create a new modern Barcelona.

Cerdà created a social plan consisting of a systematic grid pattern of long straight streets crossed by wide avenues. Each house would have its own courtyard and for every 25th house there would be a school and nursery.

At junctions, the buildings were placed at a 45º angle making for greater visibility and permitting carts to stop and unload without blocking traffic. Today, you can find short-stay parking spaces in these intersections.

Nowadays, Eixample is mostly known for its modernist architecture, also called Art Noveau, and you can find most of Gaudi’s works in this beautiful part of the city.

Here, you may also find a wide selection of top-notch bars, restaurants and shops. Make sure to visit Enrique Granados Street, which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful streets in Barcelona, with many small and pleasant restaurants.

In the area west of Enrique Granados you find Barcelona's largest gay community called Gayxample with its many bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Gayxample stretches from Enrique Granados to Comte d'Urgell

Accommodation in Eixample

Eixample is a very beautiful neighbourhood and definitely quieter than the quarters around Las Ramblas. Here you have the chance to explore the cafés, restaurants and shops without meeting too many tourists.

Eixample is also a fairly large area so keep that in mind when you book your hotel. You want to book as close to Pg. de Gràcia as possible.
