Barcelona modernism guide - La Pedrera |
|
|
|

Antoni Gaudí 1852 - 1926
|
|
|
The image of Barcelona is closely associated with the architect and artist
Antoni Gaudí. To discover his work is one of the main goals for many
people visiting the city.
La Pedrera (Passeig de Gràcia, 92)
is probably the appropriate starting point for the Gaudí "Ruta de
Modernista" in Barcelona.
This residential building is located on a corner of Eixample, with its
three facades angled in such a manner that it becomes a single facade. It
is characterized by its wave-like mass of rough-chipped stone and the
curved metal bars on the balconies.
After a very expensive restoration completed in 1995, La Pedrera is once
again a magnificent sight. Not only from the outside but also indoors, for
example, the colours of the stair well are restored to their original
condition. Many of the apartments have also regained their former,
modernist appearance.
The roof of the building contains one of its biggest surprises: a forest
of chimneys and sculptures, which camouflage the entrance to the stair
well and the building's water tank. The 'La Pedrera' really shows the
greatness of Antonio Gaudí.
The attic was designed to represent the stomach of a giant sea monster.
Today, there is an exhibition with photographs and videos where you can
learn more about Gaudi's methods and logic.
